Mourant Swaziland Challenge

In 2003 Mourant teamed up with charity Hands Around The World to help people in Swaziland, an African country in the grip of poverty and an HIV epidemic. Teams of Mourant employees from several of our offices travelled to Swaziland in 2003 and 2005 to build new school facilities in remote areas of the country, and a new team has been formed to undertake a new project in April 2007.

Memories and experiences

"Our experience was for just four weeks and we scratched the surface of the many problems and issues faced by the people of Swaziland. But the strength of character that these people possess and my experience there will stay with me forever." Carolyn Bye, 2005

"One morning we attended a Swazi church service at the school. During the last hymn, people approached the altar with gifts including fruit, vegetables and biscuits; we were told that these were for us as a thank you for building the classrooms. These gifts were from people who had so little, people who would eat maize and beans every day as it was all they had, and they were giving us avocados! The feeling of guilt and unworthiness was incredible and will be with me for a long time. " Ian Wilson, 2005

"The singing of the children never failed to move us, nearly to tears most times, and on this occasion the children had brought offerings of food. It was amazing to see them bring these gifts - food which was so needed by their families. We were overwhelmed by their kindness and generosity when we found out these gifts were for us." Debbie Le Sueur, 2005
