The trustees of The Amazon Trust have agreed to provide £750,000 in funding to The Prince’s Trust for its proposed programme of development for disadvantaged young people in Jersey. The Prince’s Trust has a commitment in principle for matched funding from the States of Jersey, making possible financial support approaching £1.5 million over the six year programme.
The Amazon Trust is a charitable trust, originally established with funds provided by Barclays group companies. Mourant acts as trustee and administrator of the Trust.
The Prince’s Trust’s programme is designed to help young Jersey people find direction and success. Assisted financially by The Amazon Trust and delivered by The Prince’s Trust in partnership with the Jersey Youth Service, the programme will provide a structured route for young people aged 14 to 25. Through in-school learning, community enterprise projects and structured personal development courses, young people will be supported to a stage where they can consider enterprise, employment and self-employment as a realistic goal.
The programme will also provide access to finance in the form of grants for personal skills development or test marketing. In addition, wherever possible, business loans will provide the seed finance for starting up a new business or social enterprise, and the financial support will be complemented by the assistance of volunteer mentors.
The programme will engage up to 500 young Jersey people over six years, focusing on under-achievers, offenders, those in care and the unemployed.
At a meeting in Jersey on Tuesday 5 September, representatives of The Prince’s Trust and The Amazon Trust will sign a service level agreement governing the delivery and funding of the Jersey programme.
Nicola Davies, Chief Executive of Mourant and a trustee of The Amazon Trust, commented:
’The trustees had for some time been considering how to create a programme to help disadvantaged young Jersey people find a path to greater personal success. Our contacts at Barclays introduced us to The Prince’s Trust whose track record in this field is very well known. With matching funding from the States, we’re collectively now able to launch a programme that we hope will make a material difference to the lives of many young Jersey people in need of support.’
