Mourant teams up with transatlantic yachtsman Phil Sharp

23.11.2006

Mourant has teamed up with Route du Rhum class-winning yachtsman Phil Sharp to create a "money can’t buy" lot for the 2006 Rotary de la Manche and Channel 103 charity auction in aid of the Joint Charities Christmas Appeal.

The lot consists of the opportunity for two people to sail around Jersey with Phil Sharp on a day in 2007 to be mutually agreed. Phil’s choice of vessel for the day will depend on the development of his plans for future races.

On Friday 17 November, Jerseyman Phil Sharp took first place in the Route du Rhum Classe 40 monohull fleet in a time of 18 Days 10 hours and 21 minutes, beating several top French sailors who traditionally dominate this race. It is a fantastic achievement for the Jersey-based sailor who was competing in his first Route du Rhum. Dame Ellen MacArthur was the previous winner in the monohull class, racing to victory the last time the race was run in 2002. Phil is currently in Guadeloupe, preparing to sail back across the Atlantic.

Matthew Robins, Mourant’s Director of Marketing, commented:

’People at Mourant were following Phil’s progress in the Route du Rhum with great excitement as it became obvious that this young Jerseyman was looking likely to repeat the much-celebrated success of Ellen MacArthur, and we were delighted when we heard of his victory. Like Mourant, Phil is taking Jersey onto the world stage, and we are proud to associate ourselves with him in sponsoring this exciting auction lot.’

The auction takes place live on air on Sunday 10 December 2006 on Channel 103. You can listen live here.
