Mourant Discrimination Conference 2007
With the new Discrimination Law due to take effect from spring 2008 in Jersey, and already in place in Guernsey, we’ve decided to hold a full-day conference in Jersey to cover some of the law’s key points for businesses in the Channel Islands. Most notably issues relating to race and sex, the first of the new laws to come into effect.
From spring 2008, if you discriminate against an employee in relation to their:
-
Recruitment and selection;
-
Opportunities for promotion, transfers or training;
-
Pay and benefits e.g. discretionary bonuses; or
-
Selection for redundancy/dismissal
on the basis of their colour, race, nationality, ethnic origin or national origin, you may be defending a claim for race discrimination in Jersey.
If you operate in Guernsey, you could also be defending a claim against sex discrimination. In Jersey, this will also apply very soon.
Consider the following in relation to your business:
-
Can you be sure you don’t discriminate in recruitment?
-
Might you be seen to offer better promotion prospects to employees who are from Jersey?
-
Discretionary bonuses - is the selection criteria discriminatory?
-
Could managers’ "office banter" be viewed by employees as harassment?
-
How would you defend a discrimination claim?
This full-day conference has been designed to help you:
-
Learn from Employment law and HR specialists from the UK and Jersey;
-
Understand some of the key aspects of the UK’s and Jersey’s Discrimination laws;
-
Know how to react quickly and knowledgeably when issues arise;
-
Gain confidence in processes and policies against potential employment disputes; and
-
Deepen your knowledge for day to day recruitment and/or difficult employee scenarios.
Why this event?
Senior managers and HR professionals, in particular, need to fully understand the implications of the Discrimination Law and how to deal with employment disputes should they arise. This one-day introduction to key issues arising from the new law, with a focus on race and sex, (the first of the laws to come into force), will be presented by leading Employment Law and HR practitioners, giving their experience from a UK and Channel Islands perspective.
To add to the experience of local practitioners we’re delighted to have two speakers from the UK: Pete Talibart, Head of Employment Law at Norton Rose and Tariq Sadiq, Head of Employment Law Group at No5 Chambers and part-time chairman of the Employment Tribunal. Both speakers will present on their experience on how the current UK Discrimination Law has affected employers, with possible learnings for businesses in the Channel Islands in terms of best practice for the Law’s implementation here. Delegates will also benefit from workshop sessions with individual speakers to develop knowledge and further understanding.
Certificates of attendance will also be available to count toward CPD.
