Continued recognition for Mourant in the Caribbean
21 November 2019
Teams from across Mourant's British Virgin Islands (BVI) and Cayman Islands practices have been recognized in the 2020 edition of Legal 500 Caribbean. In total, 21 of the firm's lawyers have been featured in this year's rankings.
Legal 500 is one of the world's leading legal directories, which ranks law firms following a thorough independent research process, including interviews with clients and peers as well as information provided by the firms themselves.
In the Cayman Islands, the Mourant Dispute Resolution practice maintained its top tier ranking, a position it has held for a number of years. Clients praised the team as "among the strongest in the Cayman Islands".
Tier two rankings were maintained across the board by the Cayman Corporate & Commercial, Investment Funds and Banking, Finance & Capital Markets teams.
Clients spoke highly of the "smart and practical" Banking and Finance team, who are "very knowledgeable, extremely responsive and user friendly". The Investment Funds practice was recognized for its "co-operative work style, knowledge of law and commercial approach" and for doing "an excellent job on Cayman fund formations and ongoing fund-related advice". The "strong, well-led" Corporate & Commercial team "is perhaps the most responsive in the Cayman Islands".
Legal 500 also noted significant growth of the Cayman team in the last 12 months, with the appointment of two partners: corporate and finance specialist, Ramesh Maharaj and banking and finance lawyer, Alexandra Woodcock.
In the BVI, the "incredibly responsive, practical and commercial" team retained their tier three rankings for all three categories: Banking, Finance & Capital Markets, Corporate & Commercial and Dispute Resolution.
Clients stated that the BVI Dispute Resolution team had "gained a stellar reputation in the litigation field for the consistent high quality of its service", while the Corporate team "really understood our need to get the transaction completed in the time available (which was very tight) and were able to tailor their advice and service to help us meet the deadline".
Partners Eleanor Morgan, Hayden Isbister, Hector Robinson QC, Neal Lomax, Peter Hayden, Rachael McDonald, Ramesh Maharaj and Simon Dickson were all listed as 'Leading Individuals', while Catherine Pham and Nicholas Fox were listed as 'Next Generation Partners'. Christopher Levers, Gemma Cowan, Nathaniel Luker and Shane Donovan were all recognized as 'Rising Stars'.
