The first Guernsey In-house Network, to connect in-house lawyers, launched at an event last night.

Established by leading offshore law firm, Mourant, the Network brings together in-house lawyers from across the island. It will include a varied programme of events to explore the issues faced by in-house counsel.

The inaugural event was opened by Mourant Guernsey Managing Partner, Jessica Roland, followed by a talk from Emma Martins, Data Protection Commissioner at Office of the Data Protection Authority. Emma shared her views on the social and economic importance of good data protection regulation as well as the approach her office is taking to oversight of the law.

Jessica said: "In the last few years we've seen an increasing number of in-house lawyers working in Guernsey and we understand that although they face some of the same issues as those of us in private practice, they also have very different challenges, often working independently or in small teams to support their business. We wanted to create a dedicated forum for in-house lawyers to connect, sharing their experiences and best practice to support one another in their roles. The network will also help us to develop a deeper understanding of the challenges they face, so that we can adapt the way we work to meet the changing needs of our clients – which often involves working in partnership with in–house lawyers."

"The response so far has been overwhelmingly positive and we're looking forward to seeing many familiar, and new, faces as the network continues to grow and we explore the hot topics on the agenda of Guernsey's in-house legal community."

The launch of GIN follows hot on the heels of the Jersey In-house Network, which was launched by the firm in November 2018.
