2019 Mourant Essay Competition opens up dialogue on mental health

25 June 2019

An essay competition that aims to highlight the importance of mental health launches in Jersey secondary schools this month, thanks to the continued support of leading offshore law firm, Mourant.

The Mourant Psychology Essay Competition, now in its second year, is open to Year 13 pupils studying Psychology either at A-level or through the International Baccalaureate and invites entrants to write a 1,000 word essay on a topic relating to mental health in Psychology.

Mourant Counsel and supporter of the initiative, Sarah Huelin, said: "We're proud to partner with Jersey's schools for the second consecutive year in this competition that encourages young people to consider, talk openly and share their thoughts and opinions on mental health.

"As an employer, we're committed to supporting the mental and physical wellbeing of our people and raising awareness and understanding of mental health. This competition is a great way to open up the dialogue on this important issue and address the social stigma that is so often attached to mental ill health."

Competition entrants have the chance to win one of three cash prizes. First prize is £200 plus a £350 bursary to contribute to the cost of university visits. Second and third prizes are £150 and £100 respectively.

The competition is to be judged by an independent panel composed of Michelle Vaughan - Principal Educational Psychologist, Ruth Emsley - Principal Prison Psychologist and Rachel Baxter - Senior Adviser with responsibility for teaching and learning and secondary curriculum from the Education Department.

Adrian Moss, Head of Psychology at Hautlieu School and competition co-ordinator, said: "The competition is designed to enable students to demonstrate an extension in their knowledge of Psychology and allows them to demonstrate to employers or universities a genuine interest on the subject of mental health. Awareness of mental health and resilience is increasingly more important in both the school and the work environment. I'm therefore grateful for the continued support received from Mourant in helping place a spotlight on this important topic."

Students interested in entering the competition should contact Adrian Moss at a.moss@hautlieu.sch.je or speak with their A-level Psychology teacher. Closing date for entries is 17 July 2019 with an award ceremony for the winners taking place on 24 September.
