Home Energy Audits launched by the Jersey government

In response to growing environmental concerns and the need for energy efficiency, the Jersey government has launched an initiative to promote Home Energy Audits.

In 2023, over £200,000 was allocated in subsidies to support homeowners to assess the energy efficiency of their properties, a move aimed not only at reducing carbon emissions but also at helping homeowners reduce their energy bills by identifying and addressing areas of excessive energy consumption. 

What are the benefits of Home Energy Audits?

Home Energy Audits should provide a comprehensive evaluation of a home's energy use, and also offer tailored recommendations for improvements. They are crucial for understanding how energy is consumed within a home and identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency, from simple behavioural changes, like adjusting thermostats, to more substantial home improvements.

An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is awarded as part of this audit, rating homes from A (very efficient) to G (inefficient) and suggesting steps to improve this rating.

How are Home Energy Audits carried out?

If you proceed with an audit, a qualified assessor will visit your home to carry it out, which is likely to take between 45 minutes to one and a half hours. The assessor will check every room in your home to take measurements, photos, and notes on its construction and ask questions about your heating habits, such as whether you use a timer for your heating and when it turns on and off.

The assessor will input this information into an online tool that has been personalised for Jersey homes to obtain a rating. You should receive a copy of the EPC, and the assessor will discuss recommendations to improve your home's energy efficiency with you.

Subsidies available  

The initial subsidy of up to £250 has now been reduced to a maximum of £150 per household which, according to the government, will broaden the support's reach and enable more homeowners to benefit from the scheme.  

As the island moves towards mandatory EPCs in 2026, these energy audits represent a significant step toward building a more energy-efficient and environmentally conscious society.
