Bridging oceans, one parcel at a time: Jersey and Mauritius
A simple idea between colleagues in Jersey and Mauritius has turned everyday collaboration into something special.
Each morning, Mourant colleagues start the day with the type of tasks you might expect from a global professional services business – emails, meetings and maintaining high levels of client service.
We value our exchanges with colleagues across locations, but it is difficult to feel truly connected to people thousands of miles away, beyond client work and shared visions.
However, over recent months, that is exactly what happened between two of our teams in Jersey and Mauritius.
The idea was delightfully simple. What if a small piece of our everyday lives was shared with colleagues overseas? A parcel filled with local gifts and photos of our families and teams, offering a glimpse of who we are beyond a video call or a quick email.
Birds of a feather
It began unexpectedly with Pippin, Paris Ozouf’s rescued racing pigeon in Jersey. And Rio, an Indian Ringneck Parakeet and a much‑loved pet of Avishek Dhulsingur in Mauritius.
When a casual remark about wishing for one of Rio’s feathers sparked a bigger thought, the teams came together to curate little boxes filled with culture and care. Those light, personal details opened the door to something more with interests exchanged, stories traded and photos shared.
The arrival of each parcel sent smiles around the office and started new conversations. They turned colleagues into friends, and they helped build stronger connections.
There is something moving about opening a box and realising someone overseas has chosen items that represent their home, their team and their day-to-day life.
It built curiosity too. What would the other team send? Would the photos reveal a new story or character? The small moments of anticipation brought unexpected moments of joy to otherwise normal working patterns.
Speaking about the exchanges, Paris Ozouf, Senior Administrator – Mourant Governance Services, said:
“What really stood out was how quickly the exchanges deepened connections. There was added context for the people on screen and the places they were from. As a team, it made us more observant and appreciative of the collaborative effort we are all part of.”
“Friendship at work does not have to mean constant socialising or personal breakthroughs. Often it starts with something smaller. A shared laugh. A thoughtful gesture. A recognition that the person on the other end of the line has a life, a culture and a story, just like you do.”
Avishek Dhulsingur, Assistant Manager – Mourant Governance Services, added:
“This parcel swap was never about gifts for their own sake. It was about value. The value of connection and empathy, and of investing a little time in relationships that make our working lives better.”
“In a world where remote and overseas collaboration is the norm, small initiatives like this can make a very big difference.”
This is a fantastic example our teams in Mauritius and Jersey reminding us that great teamwork is built not just on processes, but on people.
Sometimes the most meaningful bridges are built one parcel at a time.
